Traditional Lava Rock Molcajete- Mortar and Pestle

The molcajete was used by pre-hispanic Mesoamerican cultures including the Aztec and Maya, stretching back several thousand years. The rough surface of the stone creates a superb grinding surface that maintains itself over time as tiny bubbles in the stone are ground down, replenishing the textured surface. As the porous stone is impossible to fully clean, molcajetes are known to "season" (much like cast iron skillets), carrying over flavours from one preparation to another. Salsas and guacamole prepared in molcajetes are known to have a distinctive texture, and some also carry a subtle difference in flavour, from those prepared in blenders. This traditional Mexican stone bowl is used to grind spices and chiles, or to make the traditional foods like salsas, mole's (mohl-LAY) and guacamole. The diameter of the bowl is aproximately 7" and 4" in height. Each piece is hand crafted by artisans so your molcajete may have minor variations to the one shown on the picture! Made in Mexico.
